He wrote these words to his lover, Lesbia, after she had been unfaithful many times. "Odi et amo. quare id faciam, fortasse requiris?nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior." "I hate / loathe and I love / desire [you]. If, perchance, you ask me why, an answer I cannot give. But I know I feel it and it is torture."The work reflects his conflicting feelings of love and despair.
