Johann Mattheson, composer, writer, diplomat, lexicographer, and music theorist, was born in Hamburg on September 28, 1681. He and George Frideric Handel were close friends, although Mattheson nearly killed Handel in a sudden quarrel during a performance of the former's opera, 'Cleopatra'. Handel's life was saved by a large button which turned aside Mattheson's sword. after which the two were reconciled. It may thus seem surprising to learn that after 1706 Mattheson's chief career was as a professional diplomat. He had studied English in school, and it grew so fluent that he became tutor to the son of the English Ambassador, Sir John Wich, and then that gentleman's Secretary. In that capacity he went on diplomatic missions abroad, representing the Ambassador. In 1709, he married in English woman. Johann Mattheson died in Hamburg, on April 17, 1764, and is buried in the vault of Hamburg's Saint Michaelis' Church. Three Alto Recorders, or Three Violins, or Three Flutes. performing score.
