Arthur Somervell. 1863-1937. was educated at Uppingham School and King's College, Cambridge. After studying with Stanford at the University he continued his musical education in Berlin with Kiel and Bargiel. In 1885 he went to the Royal College of Music and studied with Parry. Later he joined the teaching staff at the Royal College and in 1901 began to work as an inspector. This led to an appointment as Inspector of Music to the Board of Education although he had shown much promise as a composer.
