The work begins diatonically, and has many such passages, but there are some extra- ordinary chromaticisms, dissonances and tonal shifts. The need for accurate tuning makes this work difficult, but there is enough straight-forward material not to put it out of reach of a moderately experienced choir. Written for the Los Angeles Chamber Singers and its music director, Peter Rutenberg, and as a sequel to Chihara's 'Magnificat' for women's voices. EP 66614. , this is an expressive, striking work, The Alma Mater Dei is contrapuntal, evoking Palestrina, which contrasts with the homophonic style of the Alleluia, which reminded one listener of a Verdi chorus.
