Lassus composed this motet to be sung during the service for the reception of Cardinal Reginald Pole, that took place in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, on the first Sunday of Advent, 2 December 1554. Lassus was in England at this time, as was also Philippe de Monte , and both were probably present. In the first verse, the author of the text. most probably Lassus himself. makes a wordplay between poli. heavens. and Pole. vocative of the Cardinal's latinized surname, Polus.
